We are delighted to announce that we have successfully been awarded funding by MOPAC to extend our domestic abuse support services. Following on from our 2016 research case study into improving access to domestic abuse support for BAME women and children in Croydon, we are now able to offer additional support services specifically for Black Asian and Minority Ethnic group women.

Working as part of a tri-borough partnership with Croydon BME Forum, and ASHA Projects until July 2019, our BAME Womens Project will be delivering community focused outreach and advise services across the boroughs of Bromley, Croydon and Lambeth. Based on the findings of our case study, it was illustrated that gaining access to right kind of support around domestic abuse can be a great challenge for BAME women. It highlighted the numerous cultural, societal, financial and awareness hurdles that many women must overcome in order to be risk free of abuse.

In response to these challenges The BAME Womens Project aims to tackle social isolation of BAME women by removing the mental and physical barriers when trying to access advice and support; help break the silence around domestic abuse and empower women to take control of their futures.

The project is being delivered via the provision of training sessions for professionals and essential outreach support services in the form of coffee mornings and 1:1 support specifically for Black Asian and Minority Ethnic group women, whether or not they experience Domestic Abuse or Violence against women.

Professionals are welcome to refer relevant clients into the service or attend training sessions to further equip themselves with social and cultural knowledge around domestic abuse within this community.

Our Sisters Own BAME Coffee Mornings are now running regular sessions for BAME women to:

      • Build social networks and friendships
      • Encourage women to develop new skills
      • Improve physical, emotional and mental wellbeing
      • Access advice and 1:1 support

Our sessions are hosted in multiple locations, we are also open to hosting coffee mornings within existing community groups, simply contact the relevant borough coordinator.
