As we put 2022 in the rear-view mirror, we’re looking ahead to some great cultural offerings in 2023 that explore important and hard-hitting themes around domestic abuse and women fighting for freedom & justice.

Women, Talking (2022)

Based on the novel by Miriam Toews, Women, Talking is an important, timely movie that asks all the right questions about how we respond to the mistreatment of women in society. The film is based on a true story, the facts of which are beyond horrifying – totalling hundreds of rapes and other abuses over 5 years – and sadly not the only example of serious abuses committed within religious communities exposed in recent years. A story of incredible courage in the face of oppression.

Alice, Darling (2022)

This debut feature film from female director Mary Nighy is a quietly powerful drama about psychological abuse, manipulation and damage. A great performance from Anna Kendrick (Pitch Perfect) puts a woman’s difficult exit from a dangerous relationship front and centre, as her domestic reality becomes painfully clear to her friends.

Birds Eye View

Birds Eye View is a UK-wide charity with a mission to bring a broader perspective of the world through cinema. They support films by women & non-binary people, with the aim of building a community for those who make, show, release and watch them. Their work brings ever greater audiences to films by marginalised creatives, developing safe and accessible spaces for conversation, promoting a de-patriarchal and de-colonised lens on the world, and advocating for social justice in all film spaces.
