Pledges needed for BCWA’s Big Give Christmas Challenge

This year, Bromley & Croydon Women’s Aidis applying to take part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge, the UK’s biggest online match funding campaign. Our campaign, ‘Christmas Is No Excuse For Abuse’, aims to raise awareness and vital funds to support women and their children fleeing domestic abuse during the festive period.

Sadly, Christmas often brings an increase in the incidence of domestic abuse and with many ‘safe places’ closed, it can be difficult for victims to access help when they need it. Perpetrators may use this to their advantage and escalate abuse or blame their abusive behaviours on the additional pressures of the season.

Bromley & Croydon Women’s Aid (BCWA) will be there for those who need us this Christmas, supporting women and children fleeing domestic abuse. Donations as part of the campaign will be assigned to BCWA’s Welfare Fund which provides essential items (bedding, toiletries, cooking appliances, etc.) for those who are moving into refuge with little to no belongings. It also offers supermarket vouchers to allow women in refuge to purchase food or toys for Christmas day, and pays for therapeutic activities/days out to help women and their children to overcome the trauma of abuse and rebuild their lives.

As part of our application, we need our key supporters to make promises of funding, called  ‘Pledges’, which will be used as match funds to double online donations made to our charity during the campaign week in December. Your commitment to funding might also help us to secure additional match funds via a Women & Girls Champion (sourced by the Big Give).

We are aiming to raise a total of £1,250 in pledges to take part in the Christmas Challenge. If you’re able to make a pledge of £100 or more to support victim – survivors during this frightening and isolating time, please complete the pledge form below by the deadline of 5pm Sunday 11th September.

About the Christmas Challenge

The Big Give runs the UK’s biggest match funding campaign, the Christmas Challenge. For seven days, it offers supporters of participating charities the opportunity to have their donations doubled. Founded by entrepreneur and philanthropist Sir Alec Reed CBE, the Christmas Challenge has raised millions of pounds for thousands of charity projects since it first launched on the Big Give in 2008.

The Christmas Challenge is a match funding campaign where donations to participating charities are doubled. The match funds come from two sources – charities secure some of these (Pledges) over the summer. The funds are then boosted by funds from a Big Give Champion who contributes to the match fund pot. The collective pot is used to double donations from online supporters when the campaign is live. Research shows that 84% of donors are more likely to give in a match funding campaign and that donations are on average 2.5 times bigger so we’re very excited about the opportunity to take part.

How does it work?

  • The matching pots used to double donations for charities taking part in the Christmas Challenge are made up of a combination of funds. These are funds sourced by the charity (‘Pledges’) and funds sourced by the Big Give (‘Champions’) which are available if we are successfully selected by a Champion.
  • The timeline for fulfilling the pledge (i.e. transferring the funds to us) is 6th December 2022 – 16th January 2023.
  • Fulfilment of your pledge is conditional on us receiving the appropriate online donations during the campaign. You will only be required to pay a pro-rata amount of your pledge if we don’t hit our online target – it’s our guarantee to you that we are committed to raising additional donations.
  • Please note that if you pledge to Bromley & Croydon Women’s Aid, you will not be able to make an online donation to us in December because your pledge will be used to match these donations.

Please don’t hesitate to email robyn.a@bcwa.org.uk if you have any questions about the Christmas Challenge and what being a Pledger could mean to our charity.
