― Bernardine Evaristo, ‘Girl, Woman, Other’

Welcome to Black History Month at BCWA! Below is a roundup of all the activity we have going on across the organisation as we take this time to celebrate black culture and explore it’s rich history.

Staff Cultural Book Club
Joint Winner of the Man Booker Prize 2019, Bernadine Evaristo’s novel Girl, Woman, Other is teeming with life and crackling with energy — a love song to modern Britain and black womanhood in London. The story follows the lives and struggles of twelve very different characters, telling the stories of their families, friends and lovers, across the country and through the years.

In celebration of Black History month we have given the whole team a copy of this fantastic book and will be holding staff book club sessions to discuss the book and its themes together, we’re looking forward to some great debate and exploration of cultural, racial, gender issues.

Kids Activities in Refuge
After school and half term clubs will explore black scientists and inventors, past & present through arts and craft sessions and half term outings.

Next week will see mask-making plus creative cupcake decorating sessions with our therapeutic team, exploring African colours, shapes and traditions.

Our Black Heroines

Each year in October, BCWA staff share the stories of notable black women we admire. We will be sharing weekly, giving everyone a chance to highlight the amazing work of women in many fields, and share personal inspiration.

Vibrant Food Sharing & Tasting

We will be hosting global food sharing & tasting at our refuges throughout the month, kicking off with the delicious staple cooked by pretty much every Nigerian household… Jollof rice mmmmmm.

Anti-Racism Training

A specialist training session will help us as a team to ensure we keep building a culture which welcomes constructive challenges and discussions, and in which everyone has a meaningful role to play in maintaining an anti-racist workplace.
