For those experiencing abuse from intimate partners or family members, Christmas and New Years celebrations can be an especially difficult time. While increased financial pressure, more time spent at home isolated from networks such as friends and work colleagues, fewer services open such as GPs and schools, and the prevalence of alcohol are never an excuse for abuse, these factors can all contribute to a rise in domestic abuse reported over the Christmas period.
The cost of living crisis has also impacted those experiencing abuse. Women’s Aid (2022) reported that “Almost three quarters (73%) of women living with and having financial links with the abuser said that the cost of living crisis had either prevented them from leaving or made it harder for them to leave.” Those who do leave abuse often have to leave everything behind. In the current climate especially, making ends meet can seem an impossible task, leaving little to be put towards seasonal celebrations.
