RideLondon, the world’s greatest festival of cycling returns for its 10th anniversary, and despite not previously owning a bike, BCWA team member Kumiko Broadhurst (pictured below) has signed up for the 100-mile event on Sunday 28 May.

What is RideLondon?

The RideLondon festival is run by London Marathon Events and is a London 2012 Olympics legacy project. Since 2013, the first event, the festival has featured the RideLondon Classique, which is now part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour series.

The flagship event, RideLondon-Essex 100, is a unique opportunity to ride 100 miles on traffic-free roads through the heart of London and neighbouring Essex. Last year’s route was the perfect mix of London landmarks, picturesque countryside and challenging hills, and this year’s route is set to deliver the same.

“I can’t wait for a pint of beer at the finish line!” – Kumiko

Making the miles more meaningful

Assuming she wouldn’t get a place on her first attempt, BCWA Senior Volunteer Coordinator and Japanese Outreach Officer, Kumiko, entered the ballot and managed to secure her entry along with 25,000 cycling enthusiasts. Kumiko shared “I signed up for this race as a new challenge for myself and others to reflect, motivate and engage with our communities while we are facing some difficulties in life although I have never cycled more than 20 miles in a day!”

Having raised funds when running the London Marathon in 2018 for BCWA, Kumiko decided to once again raise more than just her heartbeat and start a fundraising project via Enthuse.

Why Bromley & Croydon Women’s Aid?

As a long-standing BCWA team member, Kumiko knows first-hand the importance of our work supporting women and their children suffering domestic abuse. Kumiko joined Bromley & Croydon Women’s Aid in 2016 with a passion to support others. Having first worked in the refuge and outreach teams, Kumiko now takes on a dual role within the charity helping Japanese victim/survivors of domestic abuse up and down the country, whilst also managing our vital volunteers.

When asked how she was balancing work life and training, Kumiko said “I’m cycling into work and other places when I can. It’s not easy as I work full time and do other things in my free time – but you just have to make the time!”

How to show your support

You can make a donation to Kumiko’s fundraising project here: https://2023ridelondon.enthuse.com/pf/kumiko-broadhurst

“Any support would be greatly appreciated and this will be the one and only time I take on this kind of challenge!” – Kumiko

Your donation will help to provide safe high quality temporary accommodation, mental health support, child therapeutic services, legal advice and peer support so that women and their children can begin the recovery from the trauma of abuse.

If you fancy taking on a cycling challenge of your own, the Ford RideLondon-Essex 60 is still open for entries! Email robyn.a@bcwa.org.uk to find out more.
